About the Role:
James Maciver Costumes is looking for a creative individual who can translate the Costume Designer's ideas and drawings into real clothes, in consultation with both the Designer and the Workroom Supervisor. They will be required to work closely with a team of Creative Costume Makers / Machinists or independently on specific projects assigned to them. The role will be based at the creative studio in Milton Keynes and be working closely with the pattern department and responsible to the Head of Costume Operation. We are looking for someone with previous experience of working in a similar studio / home environment who can confidently perform the key duties and responsibilities required.
This job is Monday to Friday - 37.5 hours per week
Duties & Responsibilities:
To be responsible for the cutting of all theatrical costumes
To follow working notes and drawings / instructions relating to the makeup of the garments
Experience in bulk cutting
Ensure accuracy and precision in cutting fabric pieces
Inspect fabric flaws and defects before cutting
Organize and maintain inventory of fabrics and order stocks.
Measure and cut fabric according to specified dimensions and patterns using electric rotary cutters and scissors
Knowledge of sewing techniques and fabrics
Experience in using electric cutting tools
To ensure workspaces and fabric storage areas are kept organized and tidy
Complete company cutting sheet and ensure they are up to date with all information documented
Ensure safe keeping of all patterns and block patterns
To follow costume design specifications, seam allowances and details that are indicated on the design sheet and patterns
To regularly meet to plan and update the workroom supervisor regarding the daily / weekly workload
Ensuring that all sewing machine repairs are reported promptly to the workroom
Ensure that all paperwork and invoices are kept safe and shared with the Office
To communicate any questions / concerns to the workroom supervisor upon project handover ensuring maximum productivity
Advance knowledge and understanding of drafting patterns and cutting
To ensure all working notes / photographs are documented on the design sheet.
Swatches to taken and documented along with any cutting lay detailsEssential Skills & Qualifications:
Advanced knowledge in construction methods
Excellent finishing skills and a great attention to detail
Knowledge and experience of handling a wide range of fabrics including woven, lycra, knit and chiffon
Experience in working meterage when working a pattern lay for cutting
Minimum of 2 years' experience of working within the garment making/ costume making industry, with a minimum of 1 year in industry
Understanding of garment construction
Proven track record of making garments and costumes in a professional workroom
Ability to work with due regard to Health & SafetyDesirable skills and qualifications:
Good knowledge of basic Health & Safety
College degree in pattern makingBenefits:
