· Ability to learn and process information whilst undertaking the role.
· The ability to read, understand and implement technical documentation is vital.
· Being able to communicate with customers and prioritise workload in what can be a changing environment is essential.

INTELLECTUAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
· The scope of equipments worked on is vast, ranging across approximately two hundred different equipment types and models from dental to medical. Dental spanning across dentist chairs, pressure sterilizers to X-Ray machines. Medical across Electrocardiograms (ECG), suction units to vital signs monitors.
· The routine/scheduled servicing element of the job is largely documented through the AESPs, which are accessed through Tech Docs on line (TDOL) and servicing manuals, but the knowledge and familiarity with the equipment required to carry out these instructions is needed across all equipment types.

· The repair/unscheduled element of the job requires intuitive and developed troubleshooting techniques. A dental chair, for example, has complex electronic, mechanical and pneumatic systems all working together to achieve the functions of the chair and instruments whilst ensuring patient safety. Fault finding on a system like this requires skill and knowledge that can only be gained from experience and the engineering abilities of the individuals within the team.

· Each MDSS location has a large degree of autonomy in how their work is scheduled. The servicing requirements is displayed on a month by month basis within Perseus, it is up to the individual location to schedule in the work within this. This is done with consultation with the customer to ensure timely completion and access to equipment in a manner as to not disrupt the work of the customer.

· The repair/unscheduled work is then fed in on top of the scheduled work by direct contact with the MDSS Team Members from the customer. This work must also be planned in and prioritised to ensure smooth running of the customers locations we are responsible for.

· The time management skills to complete this are dependent on the Team Members and key to the smooth operation of the Team as a whole and feed into DECAs performance.

· The knowledge and skills attained by the Team Members are also drawn upon as SMEs by the customer who will use us as a first port of call with equipment functionality, performance and patient safety issues

· Knowledge of the legislative criteria associated with the role is also vast and key. This ensures the work carried out is to a safe level and that the documentation generated and retained fulfils the legal requirements. Understanding technical documentation is a skill utilised extensively for this aspect.

· Due to the nature of the work, schedules and priorities can change over the course of the day. The ability to be flexible is therefore required in the role.

· Required to work at different locations and therefore have to be mentally flexible in terms of approach, challenges and environments.

COMMUNICATION DEMANDS OF THE JOB
· The role demands excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as they are required to communicate with a large array of people and organisations such as Tri-Service Medical Centres, Dental Centres, Rehabilitation and Physio Departments, Veterinary Units, HMS Ships and Submarines, RFA Ships, Regimental Aid Posts (RAPs), Field Hospitals and Armed Forces Careers Offices (AFCO).

· The role requires flexibility in style in order to communicate with high and low ranking military personal, high and low ranking civil servants from organisations outside of DECA and OEMs.

· Required to communicate internally with other team members and departments within DECA.
· The team is geographically spread around the UK, so face to face communication is not normally possible with the other employees of DECA, therefore, both telephone and email communication skills are vital.

· Communicating with customers and prioritise workload in what can be a changing environment is essential.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
· Driving is a large element of the role as the majority of the work is carried out at user sites. Team members can be required to drive up to 30,000 work miles per year.

· Some of the equipment worked on is very heavy and manual handling techniques are utilised. Also some equipment is located in cupboards where access is limited.

· Movement of equipment around and on/off of Ships and Submarines due to the size and construction of the vessels if often limited.

· Overnight stays are sometimes required due to the distance away from the MDSS location.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
· The work location changes on a daily basis, so being adaptable to the conditions and regulations of many different sites is required.

· Work will very often be carried out as a lone worker, so self-reliance and adaptability is essential.

· The work environment is often clinical in nature therefore this presents its own challenges which the engineer must be fully conversant with.

· Infection risks (hepatitis B, etc.)

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· A accredited background in either Electronic or electrical engineering.
· A full UK/EU Driving Licence.
· A working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
