MCA have embarked on an exciting journey to change the way that we use data across the organisation, to empower our people and partners to harness the power of data to make the best decisions to save lives, and create safer, more sustainable seas.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineering professional to join our growing team as the Head of Data Engineering in the Information Technology Directorate. You will bring your experience and use your passion and enthusiasm to work across all areas of the MCA, and lead a team to support our mission and help make our data vision a reality.
Reporting to the Chief Data Architect, the Head of Data Engineering is a pivotal role in our journey to becoming a data enabled organisation, responsible for designing, implementing and leading the data engineering pipelines to deliver trusted data and supporting technologies to enable the organisation to analyse, share and exploit our data assets.
The successful applicant will be able to deliver cloud pipelines. They will inspire and coach the Data Engineering team to apply best practice to unlock data from source systems. They will have strong programming skills and be skilful in actively creating data pipelines and deliver data for analysis and reporting across the business.
The Head of Data Engineering will collaborate closely with Data Scientists, Information Asset Owners and wider Government Data Engineering professionals to design, develop and deploy data services, advanced analytics and data science.
The role holder will also champion continuous improvement, promoting innovation and integrating new data development technologies into the MCA Data Platform.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
* Responsible for designing, architecting and building data pipeline solutions.
* Working with the Head of Data Science taking responsibility for designing and delivering the data roadmap for the MCA.
* Providing technical leadership across data projects and programmes.
* Contributing to creating an agile, fast paced organisation by promoting innovation as we investigate and adopt modern technologies and modernise our approach to become a data-enabled organisation.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take a key role within our dynamic and collaborative team, enjoying an agile work environment with exposure to the full data life cycle delivering new systems and services. You will join early in our journey to deliver the data strategy, unlocking the data within our organisation, bringing it to life and ensuring it is used to enable better decision making across all functions within the MCA.
There may be a requirement for travel on official duty within the UK, which may involve overnight stays away from home.
Person specification
About You
We are looking to be joined by a motivated individual with proven experience in data and/or software engineering, preferably using Python in a cloud environment.
You will be adept at delivering data engineering projects at pace, working through complex business problems, and partnering with internal and external stakeholders.
You will have strong knowledge of technical design, implementation, and security. You will also have strong experience of a broad range of data management processes and technologies, both traditional and big data.
An excellent communicator, you are able to establish relationships with a wide range of stakeholders of varying seniority levels.
Further Information
Office locations for this role will either be Southampton, Cardiff or Fareham. MCA supports flexible working and operates a hybrid working model between home and office for this role, giving you greater flexibility over where and when you work. Details of the arrangement will be discussed further with your line manager.
The central team for this role is based on Southampton. There will be a requirement to travel (as per business requirements) for meetings, site and stakeholder visits.
Please note that applicants who are not already in the Civil Service at this grade, will enter into this role at the bottom band of the salary range if they are successful.
