The business has achieved strong YOY growth, but now face a number of positive challenges. These include managing revenue, increased customer demand, sustainability, and expansion of service offering. They have a host of clients with an extensive portfolio of projects across all sectors including, but not limited to education (schools), commercial, industrial, residential, retail, leisure, healthcare, public, museum and heritage.
Role responsibilities
The Principal Engineer will be responsible for managing the workload and technical standard of local design engineering staff with the support of the Project Lead and Team Leader. They will be responsible for producing fee proposals and for monitoring the resource profile and profitability of the projects they work on, with support provided as required to develop these skills.
The Principal Engineer will be capable of the full design of Mechanical or Electrical services including preparation of drawings, calculations, Contractors Proposals, and all relevant supporting documentation for projects at Pricing and Construction stages to ensure the Clients requirements are met. Youll be supported and encouraged to work towards Chartership, if not already.
Technical
* Managing the local Design Department and support the Project Lead and Team Leader with workload in the office
* Supporting the Lead Engineer with input to the production of monthly management reports.
* Supporting the regional Directors with Design queries
* Taking part in regular Principal Engineer meetings as required by the Lead Engineer, to discuss design department matters including, resource, projects, design issues etc.
* Attending design meetings with Client / Lead Engineer to accept design brief and/or advise on proposed work.
* Arranging required survey work
* Preparation of Contractors Proposals.
* Arranging the preparation of drawings and technical back-up for Planning Applications (Building Warrant Scotland).
* Responsibility for design of mechanical / electrical services inclusive of calculations, layout drawings and specification(s)
* Carry out design reviews in line with design QA documents.
* Participation in project hand over meetings including defects and incomplete works inspections
* Ensuring team members are kept abreast of all new developments in sustainable technology and associated training schemes
* Carry out Technical Presentations to End Users, Clients, and Staff
* On BIM enabled Projects, information roles and duties as defined in ISO 19650 and / or the project BIM Execution Plan (BEP)
People Management
* Managing the local Design Team to carry out their duties to the best of their ability
* Assist the Lead Engineer with project resourcing across all UK offices.
* Assist the Lead Engineer with the management of staff annual leave applications and help to co-ordinate these with the aim of maintaining sufficient holiday cover within the design department.
* Assist the Lead Engineer in managing local staff issues including absence, return to work interviews, counselling, performance reviews, recruitment etc
Health & Safety
* Ensuring all employees are aware of their obligations under the Health & Safety Policy, and that work is carried out in accordance with the policy at all times
* Ensuring that all health, safety and environmental incidents and complaints are reported and investigated and that action points arising from site safety surveys, audits, accident reports and other recommendations are successfully closed off

Experience/Qualifications
* Proven ability to manage and supervise Engineers to support Project Managers and Estimators
* Relevant formal qualifications are required covering all aspects of Mechanical / Electrical Building Services with substantial experience in the design and calculation of:
* Mechanical Commercially aware design of Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning, Domestic Hot and Cold-Water Services, Above Ground Foul Drainage and Utilities.
* Electrical Commercially aware design of small Power, Lighting, Emergency Lighting (internal and external), Fire Alarm, Security, Data and Utilities.
* Computer literate with a working knowledge of AutoCAD and design package software including:
* Mechanical - Hevacomp or IES
* Electrical Dialux, Relux, Amtech
* Preferred - Working knowledge of Revit MEP and Stabicad
Package / Remuneration:
The remuneration package offered at this stage is subject to the experience of the candidate, but will likely include the following:
Basic Salary: Between £50,000 - £70,000
Company Car: Car Allowance (£6K)
