An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Design Department Manager working for a successful Manufacturing Company that supply manufactured products to the construction/ building services industry and are based in Diss, Norfolk.The Company
The company are a well-established Manufacturing company who provide technical expertise in the Design and Manufacture of Architectural Glass Rooflights at the cutting edge of Rooflight Design, their products can be found in Europe, The USA and Australia. With almost 30 years of trading under their belt, they are ambitious and keen to continue to grow, thrive and deliver beautiful rooflights to improve peoples living environments.
The Role
This position offers a fantastic opportunity to join a thriving business and lead a busy and friendly Bespoke Design Department of 6 team members. We are seeking experienced candidates that ideally have an appreciation of manufacturing for the building services industry and will have an understanding of all the challenges that working in this industry may bring. This position provides an excellent opportunity to join a forward thinking and diverse company and be instrumental in leading an experienced team.
A new appointment to the team, this position has become available following a recent restructure of the Design and Product Development structure. Its offered as a full-time position working Monday Friday 8:30 17:00 and a salary of £45,000 - £50,000. Working to improve the efficiency of the department and make suitable business cases for any budgets required to implement improvements. Reporting to the Technical Director, this role also comes with the following duties and responsibilities:
* The day to day running of the busy design department including the review and sign off bespoke designs and manufacturing drawings. As well as planning and monitoring of the Design workload ensuring that all designs are completed on time and on budget
* Reporting to the Project Department of any design projects as required
* Working closely with the manufacturing department to understand their production techniques, machine and equipment capacity and limitations. Ensuring that client specifications are realistic and within the capability of the manufacturing department
* Liaison with the Sales and Project Management department to plan project timescales and ensure that all necessary information is provided to accurately interpret and deliver client requirements
* Make sure any project changes are updated and documents are version controlled and all involved parties are informed
* Assist the Senior Design Engineer in the development of Design standardisation within a Bespoke solution environment, ensuring consistent solutions for common design problems. Mentoring the Senior Design Engineer as required
* Provide support and work to develop the management skills of the Senior Design Engineer to help them achieve their objectives
* Keep up to date with the ECN records and production feedback working to develop the continuous improvement culture and work to consistently improve its effectiveness
* Work to develop parametric or simple 2D solutions for when shop drawings are required on standard products for the US market. With a view to help reduce lead times
* Using previous successful bespoke designs, develop and design templates and parametric solutions for all common configurations to avoid re-inventing the wheel Using standard parts where possible. With the primary aim of improving design efficiencies and reducing the risk of untried and tested designs being released for manufacture
* Develop and manage resource availability when responding to thermal modelling requests on bespoke projects
* Lead innovation in Bespoke product design to improve value engineering, product reliability and performance
* Ensure Autodesk Vault is utilised as the central repository for all models and drawings
* Technical liaison with clients and architects as required
* Working closely with other departments such as the NPD team to share ideas and technologies between the bespoke and standard products ensuring that new product developments are reflected in the bespoke designs and vice versa
The Candidate
We are seeking a candidate for this position who is creative, innovative and will be comfortable working within a passionate team who continuously improve products by contributing ideas and take a hand-on approach in the development of those products. This important position within the business requires candidates with the following expertise, skills and attributes:
Ideally educated to Degree Level (or HND as a minimum) in a relevant Engineering subject
* An extensive background in Mechanical Design Engineering and ideally some Electrical background would be highly advantageous
* Fully conversant in AutoCAD and 3D Autodesk Inventor and how to get the best out of it
* Some previous experience of working in a field with construction products and liaising with Architects and Project Managers would be Beneficial
* Some previous experience of managing a small team
* A solid understanding of basic manufacturing processes would be helpful
* Outstanding communication skills and the ability to offer technical advice at ease to varying audiences
* Good drawing standards and a keen eye for detail
* Excited about Engineering and a hands-on approach to innovative development
* Ideally some knowledge of aluminium extrusions would be highly desirable as would experience in using Autodesk Inventor, Revit and Vault
* Although not essential, some previous knowledge within the Glazing Industry would be highly advantageous as would an understanding on FEA and structural calculations
