Job summary

I am currently seeking a highly skilled Commercial Manager for an exciting opportunity in the construction industry. This is a fantastic full-time role, offering a dynamic mix of remote work and on-site responsibilities in Wellingborough. In this position, you will closely collaborate with the Managing Director, Segment Commercial Director, and cross-functional teams within the UK & Ireland division to drive the budgeted commercial performance through meticulous process analysis.
Working alongside the Managing Director and Segment Commercial Director, you will play a key role in ensuring exemplary commercial management of contracts, focusing on the development, maintenance, and control of commercial processes aligned with established management systems. This role encompasses a flexible working approach across various locations.
Your Mission:
Manage new and existing client and supply chain contracts, overseeing contract amendments and liaising with stakeholders on revised terms and conditions, all while managing risk profiles.
Oversee commercial procedures, including change notices, reconciliations, subcontract reconciliations, chargeable works, and payment applications.
Collaborate on cost value reports, supply chain processes, procurement, and controls to ensure alignment with established procedures.
Work with Finance and Operational colleagues to prepare bottom-up budgets and monthly forecasting.
Ensure strict budget management in accordance with contracts, achieving cost savings where possible.
Manage and report on commercial risks, client and supplier relationships.
Provide commercial support and reporting for the tendering process.
Take responsibility for effective client relationship management and liaison on commercial issues.
Key Activities:
Operational:
Provide monthly reporting to the Managing Director and Segment Commercial Director on financial data, project progress, milestones, risks, and opportunities.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in the portfolio.
Track, measure, and analyze commercial metrics using KPIs and reporting tools.
Contribute to quarterly forecast reporting, Operation Plan, and work-winning activities.
Monitor effective supply chain management and contribute to procurement strategies.
Support embedding new supply chain and procurement arrangements.
Support and input to risk reviews and implementation of mitigating actions.
Provide commercial training to teams.
Input into the departmental strategy for improvement.
Technical:
Maintain an understanding of the change strategy.
Ensure that risk assessment and management are applied to all steps in the business cycle.
Ensure that budget and cost control measures are in place and maintained.
Implement strategies that are always aligned with best interests.
Provide commercial advice to delivery teams.
Provide input to Division/Segment/Business Unit commercial discussions/reviews.
Produce and negotiate insurance claims with insurer representatives.
Contribute to ensuring policies, processes, and procedures support compliance in delivery.
People:
Responsible for day-to-day line management of the commercial team.
Manage and monitor team engagement and performance.
Effectively manage the team to optimize resource utilization.
Provide development opportunities for the team and support succession strategy.
Deliver company values and investigate customer complaints professionally.
Mentor the commercial team and others.
Who Are We Looking For?
Understanding of both private and public sector project procurement processes.
Qualification in business administration, QS, finance, or a similar field desirable.
Successful work experience as a Commercial Manager or in a relevant role.
Solid knowledge of performance reporting and financial/budgeting processes.
Experience with NEC and JCT contracts advantageous.
Excellent commercial awareness with a strategic mindset.
In-depth knowledge and experience in the UK Construction and Civils industry.
Solid knowledge of plant, products, and services in a similar commercial role.
Experience in establishing and delivering work programs and schedules.
Experience in strategic customer and supplier management and negotiation.
Track record of targeted commercial success.
Hands-on experience in creating reports and managing budgets.
Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
Outstanding communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrable interpersonal and leadership skills.
High degree of energy and self-motivation.
Respected role model for the commercial team and wider business.
Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
Ability to multitask and provide focus, direction, and solutions.
High level of IT systems awareness to operate SAP, Stage Gate, SharePoint, and bespoke reporting applications.
Ability to understand and work to company values.
